Band Leadership

John T. Hoggard band leadership is essential to the success of the Viking Bands.  If you ever have a question or concern for a band leader, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we'll forward any concerns to the appropriate individual.  

Director

Rod Reed

This is Mr. Reed's 23rd year at Hoggard High School teaching concert band, symphonic band, jazz ensemble, color guard and marching band. During that time, his groups have earned many superior and excellent ratings. Mr. Reed has been a clinician in Craven and Columbus Counties and in 2013, he was the Clinician for the NCBA Eastern District 9/10 Band.

 

Currently Mr. Reed is the Department Chair for the Hoggard Arts Department and is the Secretary for the North Carolina BandMasters Association Eastern District. Prior to moving to Wilmington in July 1998, Mr. Reed taught for 10 years in Illinois. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Western Illinois University.

 

Mr. Reed and his wife, Diane, live in Wilmington and are the proud parents of two sons, Tyler and Hunter, both of whom were Hoggard band students.

2019-2020 Staff

Forrest Budway - Percussion Scoring

Forrest was a member of DCI Drum Corps Teal Sound out of Jacksonville,FL, DCI Drum Corps Dubuque (IA) Colts and is currently a member of the DCI Drum Corps The Cavaliers from Rosemont, IL. In the marching band off season he is a member of the indoor percussion group Palmetto Percussion. Previously he graduated from Panther Creek High School in Cary, NC, and is currently a student at UNCW. We are glad to have him back.

Alan Temby 

Al has been designing marching bad drill in Indiana, leading the industry as one of the most successful drill designers in that state! He has designed for literally hundreds of programs throughout the years and at all levels of achievement. Al performed with the 32nd Hussars and Madison Drum and Bugle corps, aging out in 1975 with a World Championship! He has written for many drum corps over the years such as The Colts, Skywriters, The Bluestars, Emeral Knights and Florida Wave, to name a few.
